The Enlightened Equipment Accomplice is our choice of quilt for hiking and backpacking together. If you haven’t even thought about a double quilt for backpacking as a couple, then maybe its something you should consider, and if you have thought about it, then this quilt should be on your shortlist. We slept in the Accomplice for 45 nights on the GDT in 2025 enduring temperatures well below freezing night after night.

What’s on Offer?

There are multiple versions of this quilt sold by Enlightened Equipment, ranging in temperature, fill power, colour, fabric and so on! They offer both off the shelf versions ranging in size, fill power and temperature, and a full custom offering.

Warmth

With our quilt being rated to -12C (10F) I feel like we aired on the side of caution with absolutely zero regrets. If your new to quilts, setting up and using them right, excluding drafts and wear a warm hat, is as important as the quilt for staying warm. We camped down to -6C (21F) without any issues on the GDT. Often even venting heat in the night to stay cool enough. I believe this quilt is true to their temperature ratings, but as with all quilts and sleeping bags, reaching the temperature limit may not be entirely comfortable. The real added warmth of this quilt comes by having two people in it. Sharing body heat in one quilt makes this feel far warmer than a single version of the same temperature rating. A big pro for double quilts in general!

Popper and Baffle

The central baffle at the head end, draft collar and popper allows it to be sealed up around your neck… excludes the draft (does what it says on the tin!). But it really does make a difference. Trapping warm air and further preventing drafts helps you stay warm down into the negative temperatures.

Weight and Packability

The Accomplice of course varies in weight with size, fill power etc. This spec is 1320.83g (46.59oz) with the equivalent Enlightened Equipment Enigma (Single) being 791.53g (27.92oz). A weight saving of 262.23g (9.25oz) compared to bringing two singles. However, packability is where we have found slight drawbacks. It has to comfortably fit in one pack… which it kind of does. We like to pack our quilt out of the stuff sack at the bottom of the bag to create a soft base for heavier items. With the accomplice this can only be done in one bag and due to its size, takes up over half a 50l bag. This makes packing somewhat difficult. We sometimes opt to use the stuff sack but this makes for an unstable base in the bottom of the pack. This is however a very minor niggle. However, the weight saving is by far enough to bypass this very very minor issue, and quite frankly this “issue” is just something with double quilts in general not the specific quilt. This could be improved by opting for the higher, 950fp version.

Good Value…?

Now you might be think the standard version at £383 ($515) is expensive, and it is a lot of money! It was our biggest investment for the GDT for sure. But it really is good value… ish. Again, lets compare it to 2 singles. Well its a saving of £78 ($105) on purchasing 2 singles. Also, with Enlightened Equipment, you are paying for quality. Savings can be made by looking on the Warehouse section of their website where minor defects and overstock can bring a 20% price drop. Now, custom is more expensive but if you are serious about backpacking, its worth getting what is right first time round. Also, if you’re set on a double quilt, (which I think couples that backpack together a lot, should be) there are very limited alternatives. Therm-A-Rest make the Vela Double QC quilt, but I believe its now discontinued. Besides, it has a lower warmth to weight ratio and significantly less features. no individual baffle for each person that on the Accomplice, really limits drafts.

What about the rest of the sleeping system?

Well, how do we pair this up with a sleeping pad? You could strap 2 pads together with the straps provided allowing you to have a pad each for your solo adventures, but we opt for a double pad. Without the gap in the middle I feel we gain more warmth again, however, options are limited. Big Agnes Rapid SL double wide has been our choice.

But that’s a review for another time. But it is our second one and there is a reason its still in our packs! We both opt to backpack with a pillow too as good rest is what really allows you to crush the miles and feel good doing it!

How to Use a Quilt

Now, this applies to all quilts I know, but as you tussle, or fight, over the quilt, as you do the duvet at home, just remember. Drafts are your enemy!!! Pad straps with clips help to keep drafts out pulling the edge of the quilt slightly under you to trap hot air and keep you warm all night.

The draft collar we specified on ours was absolutely worth it. With the ability to clip and sinch around the neck individually, with the addition of the draft collar, keeping that warm air in. Now, there is no back to a quilt unlike a sleeping bag, as its just wasted insulation and a good weight saving! Also, unlike a sleeping bag, there is no hood. This means heat is lost out of your head and around the neck and face. We often get away without it in warmer temperatures but when cooler, wear a hat and maybe buff to stop that heat escaping. In even cooler temperatures, you can purchase down hoods. These further reduce the heat loss from your head and around your face. In fact, Enlightened Equipment make one called the Torrid Hood, but we have never found the need to upgrade the head gear!

If you find your getting cold in the Accomplice, or any quilt for that matter, start by ensuring all drafts are excluded. Then ensure your sleeping pad is up to the job. It is almost more important that the pad has the R value to suit the conditions. Then, is your head gear up to the job? Loosing all the heat out of you head is somewhat the same as loosing it out the quilt itself. From there, ensure you get the quilt fit for the job and look after down as best you can. It should last you a long time and help you enjoy your outdoor adventures!

Conclusion

If you backpack as a couple, I couldn’t recommend the Accomplice more. The quilt really feels like it radiats heat as you jump into it after a long day outdoors. Plus, the added warmth of a double and weight saving compared to two singles makes it well worth the extra investment. Enlightened Equipment always produce quality quilts and apparel and that’s carries over into the accomplice as well. The very minor issue with packability can easily be overlooked and may well just be a personal preference. Fully customisable, as all Enlightened Equipment quilts are, and fantastic build quality what’s not to love! If I was to buy again I would spend the extra money of the 950fp version to save even more weight and improve packability… and of course, a different colour.
